Through its Bureau of Prevention, OASAS leads New York state's efforts to prevent alcohol and other drug problems. These efforts entail the development, implementation, and maintenance of policies, resources and services in the areas of prevention. This is achieved by working in partnership with key policymakers, the provider network, individuals, families and communities to create and promote a framework that supports safe and healthy environments. The framework that has evolved to date is both comprehensive and research-based.
The actual delivery of prevention services in New York state is effected through a system consisting of some 230 providers, operating in a variety of settings, including 2,000 school-based locations, statewide. These providers deliver a wide range of services including classroom presentations, skills development workshops, training sessions for parents and teachers, and positive alternative activities for youth. Some Prevention providers serve special populations such as the elderly, Native Americans, Chinese, Hispanic, migrant workers, lesbian/gay, and the deaf.
